COPPA Parental Consent Form
Notice to Parents
In compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), parents (or legal guardians) of children under 13 years of age must consent to the collection, use and disclosure of their child’s personal information by Virtual Piano Lessons, LLC and its apps, including 1on1 Piano (referred to as the “App”). This notice describes what we collect from your child, how we use it, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and what rights you have. Our full statement of information practices is set out in our Privacy Policy.
We may have collected your online contact information from your child, along with the name of the child or the parent, solely in order to obtain your consent. Your permission is required before we collect, use or disclose your child’s personal information, and we will not grant your child access to any Virtual Piano Lessons, LLC App resource unless you provide it.
Information we collect from your child
- Account and registration information — your child’s name, email address and date of birth, a username and password, and your name, email address, mailing address and relationship to the child.
- Lesson session content — the audio and video of the live lesson, anything shared on screen during it, text chat sent within the lesson room where that feature is available, and MIDI performance data from your child’s connected keyboard or piano.
- Device and usage information — device type and operating system, browser type, IP address and device identifier, and records of when the App was used and which features were used. With your device’s permission, the App accesses the camera, microphone, Bluetooth (to connect an instrument), calendar and storage in order to deliver the lesson.
- Billing information — collected from the parent or guardian only, never from the child.
Recording of lesson sessions
The instructor may record the call session in the process of the piano lesson. A recording may capture the audio and video of the lesson, screen sharing, in-room chat and MIDI performance data, and will therefore include your child’s image and voice. Recordings are used to review the lesson with your child, to follow your child’s progress, to let your child revisit a lesson, and for quality assurance and safety. An in-App notice appears in the room when joining the room, and each connected participant must accept that notice before their audio, video, screen sharing or performance data may be captured.
Lessons involving a child under 13 are recorded only as private captures, viewable solely through authorized room access by the instructor, your child’s account and you as the consenting parent or guardian. We do not make a child’s lesson public or unlisted, and we do not transmit it to any external streaming platform. Public, unlisted and externally distributed recording or streaming is restricted to users 18 years of age and older.
The consent you give below includes consent to this recording. If you do not wish your child’s lessons to be recorded, or you wish to withdraw that consent later, email support@1on1piano.com and we will disable recording for your child’s account and delete any existing recordings.
How we use your child’s information
We use it only to create and support your child’s account, to deliver and improve the live lesson, to facilitate communication about lessons, to keep the service secure, and to keep the records of parental consent that the law requires. We do not use your child’s personal information for targeted advertising, and we do not sell it.
Who we disclose it to
We disclose your child’s information only to the service providers who perform these functions on our behalf and who are required to use it only for that purpose: our real-time transport provider that facilitates calling, Google Cloud (databases, file storage and content delivery, including storage of recordings), and Stripe (payment processing, using parent billing information only). We may also disclose information where required by law or where necessary to protect a child’s safety.
You may consent to our collection and use of your child’s personal information without consenting to its disclosure to these third parties. To consent on that basis, note it on the form below or email support@1on1piano.com. Please be aware that a live video lesson cannot be delivered without the real-time transport provider, so declining that particular disclosure will limit the features available to your child.
How long we keep it
Private room recordings are ordinarily retained for fourteen days and then deleted, unless eligible long-term storage has been activated on the account. Account information is retained for as long as your child has an account with us, and is deleted on request or when the account is closed. Records documenting your consent are retained for as long as is reasonably necessary to document and enforce that consent. We do not retain your child’s personal information for longer than is reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected.
Verifiable parental consent
You may consent to your child’s use of the App in any of the following ways:
- Complete the form on this page online; or
- Download the PDF form on this page, complete and sign it, then scan and email it to support@1on1piano.com; or
- Mail the signed and completed form to us at Virtual Piano Lessons, LLC, 4202 Wawawai-Pullman Rd, Pullman, WA 99163.
Your rights as a parent
At any time you may review the personal information we have collected from your child, ask us to delete it, refuse to permit any further collection or use of it (including recording), and revoke your consent entirely. To do any of these, email info@1on1piano.com or write to us at the address above; we will verify that you are the child’s parent or guardian before acting on the request. If you revoke consent or ask us to delete your child’s information, we will delete it and close the account, which will end your child’s access to the App.
If you do not respond
If you do not respond to this notice within a reasonable time, we will delete the online contact information, and the child’s or parent’s name, that we collected in order to reach you, and your child will not be given access to the App.
