A basic listing on Match is completely free. With Match, 1on1 Piano enables students to choose teachers that are a good fit, and provides teachers with the capability to have a full online studio for free. How are students matched with teachers?
When a profile is created, students and teachers answer questions on type of music they want to learn, personality, and more. Their matches are filtered on the basis of those tags, and they may also filter on any criteria they like as they browse through the teachers/students. Teachers may offer lessons to students, and students may request lessons from teachers
How do teachers schedule with students?
When a lesson request or offer is accepted, the scheduling link of the teacher is revealed to the student. The teacher may enter the link for the scheduling service of their choice (Fons, Calendly, Google Calendar for instance) in their teacher profile.
Does 1on1 Piano handle Tuition?
1on1 Piano Does NOT handle client billing. All billing is coordinated between the student and the teacher.
Does 1on1 Piano Control Lesson Rates?
1on1 Piano Does NOT handle lesson rates. All tuition is coordinated between the student and the teacher.
What about cancellations?
Cancellations are negotiated between student and teacher. Student classrooms have a chat available, and when a teacher offer is accepted, the email address of the student is made available to the teacher.
What ages can use 1on1 Match?
Match may be used by students of all ages. Students under 13 years of age must obtain parental permission to use 1on1 Piano, and submit the permission to 1on1 Piano for approval. This approval process is built into the onboarding process of 1on1 Piano. 1on1 Piano is a great option for young students and adult students alike because of its simplicity, clear views, and quality sound.
Sharing Sheet Music In a Call
How can I share digital sheet music during an online lesson so the student can see it? Will I need to switch between showing myself and the music?
1on1 Piano provides both collaborative annotation in sessions and screen sharing. To use collaborative annotation, the host brings up the whiteboard or presses the W keyboard shortcut. Host or peers may also share music via screen sharing. On a PC or Mac, cameras continue streaming while screen sharing, so the student can see you while you interact with the content you are sharing. To see the student simultaneously, open a second browser window and arrange the session alongside the shared content. 1on1 Piano provides an annotation tool for screen shares that is visible to all participants. On Android or iOS, the camera pauses during screen sharing, so use two devices for the session: one for cameras and sound, and another for screen sharing. 1on1 Piano allows additional mobile devices to join the call in silent mode, so you do not have to worry about echo or noise when using them for a second camera or screenshare.
Break Out Rooms
How do I make break out rooms with students?
1on1 Piano has an innovative mode called “1on1 Mode” which allows the teacher initiate a private lesson with a student while monitoring the video and caption feeds of the other students in the group class. This gives the feeling and utility of an in-person group piano room.
1on1 Piano can also run in several browser windows or tabs at the same time. If you are in a call and would like to make a breakout room for some members of the call, simply open 1on1 Piano in a second tab or window, add those users to a room, and ask them to join it. On mobile devices, you may sign in to multiple devices with the same account, so you can use a second device to create new rooms and invite users.
Internet Quality
Should I use an Ethernet cable for a more stable connection?
Ethernet is generally more reliable. If you’re near your Wi-Fi router and your internet is stable, Wi-Fi should work fine. Issues with Wi-Fi can arise from distance, obstructions, or mesh network problems. However, 1on1 Piano is highly robust and works well with a 5mbps connection.
User Interface Questions
What does the pin mean in the right-hand corner of the video stream window?
The Pin makes the pinned stream window larger than the other windows so that the pinned window can be seen easily. Several windows can be pinned at the same time. When a window is pinned, the other windows align in a gallery, which can be resized by dragging the vertical bar.
What do the dots on the left-hand corner of the video stream window do?
The dots give you additional options for that stream window. Those include allowing you to zoom in on the video stream, turn off mirroring (good for keyboard view), invert the video, annotate the video stream so that all users can see your markings, pin a window for all users, and minimize a window.
Cameras
I’m having trouble getting a side shot of the piano to where I can see the keys clearly, do you have any suggestions?
A great place to start is in our Recommended Equipment Page. There we have recommendations that accommodate the many different devices that 1on1 Piano supports. Under our Camera Recommendations, we suggest some affordable web cams and camera holders that work well with Mac, PC, and Chromebook. We also have solutions for individuals with tablets and phones that they may wish to use as a second camera. 1on1 Piano supports joining a call silently on a second device so that there is no screeching or distortion when the second device is added.
Can I use an external camera with 1on1 Piano?
Yes, 1on1 Piano supports external cameras. Ensure the camera is properly connected to your device and select it from the camera options within 1on1 Piano settings. I need to be able to see my student’s hands. Can 1on1 Piano help me do that?
1on1 Piano offers an elegant solution to the challenge of seeing student’s hands because it allows additional devices to join the call in silent mode so that they can be used as second camera. This way, a student can use devices they likely already have to provide a full view of the lesson. a great place to start is in our Recommended Equipment Page.
Will I need an expensive camera switcher to provide views of my hands, face, and pedals to the student?
Unlike Zoom and Meet, 1on1 Piano allows you to connect several cameras to your PC or Mac and use them at the same time. 1on1 Piano also has a built-in video switcher that allows you to select one or many of the cameras at the same and quickly switch between them during a lesson so that your student has a great experience.
Calling
Can 1on1 Piano handle group calls?
Yes, despite its name, 1on1 Piano can proficiently manage group calls. You can host group lessons with multiple participants effortlessly.
Is there a limit to the number of participants in a group call?
Yes, there is a participant limit. You may have up to 50 participants in a call, and streaming is coming in a future update to accommodate large concerts with thousands of participants.
Onboarding
How do I invite a student to a call?
Inviting a student is simple. Go to Rooms, chose a name under “Room name,” and then type or paste the email of one or several users into the box and click “add user.” When the user signs in at the invite email, they will see the room waiting for them. They will also receive an email with instructions on how to join your room. You may also send them an invite link for the room created.
Can I schedule calls in advance?
You won’t need to schedule a call. Teachers found on Match may schedule a call and it can serve as a reminder, but the room stays open as long as the host wishes.
Compatibility
Will 1on1 Piano work on my iPad?
Absolutely. 1on1 Piano is compatible with iPads as well as other tablets and smartphones that meet the minimum system requirements.
What devices does 1on1 Piano work on?
1on1 Piano works in Chrome and Edge on Mac, Linux, Windows, and Chromebook. On mobile devices, 1on1 Piano is available as an app on the Apple App Store and on Google Play Store.
What are the system requirements for 1on1 Piano?
1on1 Piano requires a stable internet connection, a device with video and audio capabilities, and an updated version of the operating system.
Audio
I know that 1on1 Piano has excellent sound when I connect digital pianos in the call, but will it work if I am using a microphone on an acoustic piano?
Yes! 1on1 Piano is configured by default to sound great in acoustic online music lessons. Because most video calling apps are designed for voice meetings, they default to a voice isolation filter that distorts instrument sound, and the bitrate is too low to hear the tones of a piano well.
Can I use external microphones with 1on1 Piano?
Yes, external microphones can be used for enhanced audio quality. Connect your microphone to your device and configure the audio settings in 1on1 Piano. How do I troubleshoot audio issues?
If you encounter audio issues, check your device’s system audio settings, ensure the microphone is not muted, and test the internet connection quality. If you are using an external microphone on a PC or Mac, the computer may have put the microphone to sleep to save energy, so unplugging the microphone and plugging it in again will wake it up. Restarting 1on1 Piano on your device or refreshing your browser can resolve other audio problems.
Privacy & Security
I may be liable if 1on1 Piano introduces privacy or data sharing breaches – what do you do to keep us safe?
We are very careful with app privacy and data. 1on1 Piano is COPPA compliant, its traffic is encrypted, and all API endpoints are encrypted. We know how hard teachers work to build a studio, and we know what is like to be a parent, so we made 1on1 Piano as secure as possible.
How secure are the calls?
1on1 Piano employs encryption to ensure the security and privacy of all calls. Your conversations are protected from unauthorized access.
Can I prevent unauthorized access of a room?
Yes. Hosts can add and remove users from rooms as desired. Hosts can also set a room to expire at a specific time so that no users can use the room after expiration.
Can I delete my account?
Yes, you may delete your account at any time by visiting your profile menu in the top right hand of the app. You may also leave rooms to which you have been invited at any time.
Features
Does 1on1 Piano support screen sharing?
Yes, screen sharing is supported. You can share your screen during a call by pressing the ‘Share Screen’ button and choosing to share a tab, window or entire screen. Screen share will also share the audio in a browser tab.
Does 1on1 Piano support chat?
Yes, 1on1 Piano offers chat both in a room and in a call. This means that users can communicate in a room both inside and outside of a call.
Are there options for virtual backgrounds?
Yes, virtual backgrounds are available through web on Mac OS, and support will be provided for other platforms soon.
Does 1on1 Piano provide captions?
Yes, 1on1 Piano provides captions, which can be toggled on and off as necessary.
Does 1on1 Piano provide transcripts of the lesson?
Yes, when captions are enabled, a transcript of the lesson will be available in the lesson room.
