1. Getting the app
There are two ways of accessing the app:
- Through the web app on Windows, Mac, Chromebook and Linux. Acoustic sound quality is very good on Macs running Chrome browser using the built-in microphone. Windows users experience improved acoustic sound by using a mixer and mic combo (here is what we recommend). To access the web app, go to app.1on1piano.com in Chrome or Edge and create an account. - Through an app on iOS and Android – links to download below. iOS devices sound best operating in “Wide Spectrum” mode using the built-in microphone.
2. Using the app
Acoustic vs MIDI mode:
There are two different ways of using the app – acoustic mode and MIDI mode.
Acoustic: 1on1 Piano defaults to no filter and high bitrate audio and is the choice for online lessons on any acoustic instrument. Click here for our recommended equipment for acoustic mode.
MIDI: Connects digital instruments in the call, and provides perfect sound with only one inexpensive cable.
How does this work? If both you and your student have a digital piano (nearly any brand works), you may each connect your pianos to your computer or device (iOS and Android are compatible), and the app will stream MIDI data between the devices in real time. You will literally be playing your students piano through the call, so every detail of your piano is transmitted.

Steps to Hosting a First Lesson
- Navigate to app.1on1piano.com and register
- Click on “Classrooms”
- Under “New Classroom”, name your room, and click “Create Classroom.”
- Under “Add Users to Your Classroom,” enter the email address of the student. Click “Add User.” You will now see the student’s address listed above under “Room Participants.” The student will receive an email with a link to the room and instructions.
- When the student signs in, the room will be waiting for them. They then need simply to join the room, and the lesson will start.
3. Unique App Features
- Group calling with MIDI: teach group music lessons with high sound quality, and add other devices to the call for extra camera views.
- Connect any number of webcams to your computer and show them at the same time. No hardware camera switcher or switcher software such as OBS is needed.

- Pin and zoom any window during a call.
- Annotate any window in the call and all users will see it. Use this to markup your keyboard or other stationary views.
- Real-time MIDI stream to all users in a call with smart filtering that prevents "double" piano sound but allows conversation while playing.
